 ... it's always great to hear Meek's best songs. The film feels a bit light on the musical front, though. There are many, many great tracks they could have used but don't, and it feels perverse to have moments of orchestral original music when you could have used some of Meek's weirder material. The film might argue that it's about the man rather than the work, but the two are inextricably linked. Some of Meek's music is amazing for its time, all heavy echo and wild sound effects. This film is currently on general release. A DVD will go on sale in September. Joe Meek is hardly the best-known figure in 60s pop. A successful producer in the few years before The Beatles, he had two or three hits that people would remember now, but didn't achieve lasting success. Left behind by fashion, troubled by mental health problems, and tormented by debt, Meek's story didn't have a happy ending. But he's had something of a cult following for years, and now there's a film of his life, or at least the important bits.
