Advantages: plot

I wanted to like this film. Christian Bale is a great actor, and I was excited to see him as John Connor. Sadly, I struggled with it the whole way through. The problem, for me, was the plot. For whatever reason, it's really hard to follow. It doesn't help that some is set in the past, some in the present, and some in the future. I think you need to be really up to date with the other films to get it, and since it's been years since I've watched them, I really struggled.

The basic plot revolves around Connor going back in time to save his father (then a boy) from the bad guys.

In terms of plot, it's interesting enough. There's a good mix of fighting, special effects, character work and the odd laugh which puts it right up there at the top of the pile. The special effects are used sparingly but well, and the whole world is very believable. There are reminiscences of War of the Worlds with some of it, but that's OK by me because I loved that film.

The acting is generally strong, but Bale's silly gruff voice just annoys me, and I can't help but think he's got it wrong in this one.

All in all, this is a good film, but you really need to go in with a clear knowledge of the other films to understand and follow the difficult chronology.
