Tetsuo is a movie I have meant to get around to seeing for a long time. It's been much touted by generally everyone who has seen it as everything from live action anime, live action Akira to the Japanese Eraserhead. Given my liking for Godzilla and Martial Arts movies, I oft find myself reading about Asian films, and one that always comes for praise is this ultra-low budget Black and White film from director Shinya Tsukamoto. Trying to talk about the plot of the movie will be tough, generally because their isn't much to talk about. Rating:
An hour-long feature from Japanese director Shinyu Tsukamoto, Tetsuo (also known as Tetsuo: The Iron Man) combines hyperkinetic camerawork and intensive makeup effects to tell a horrific, cyberpunk-influenced science fiction tale about the intersection of man and post-industrial technology. The central character is a Japanese salary man, an average office worker who is transformed by a brief encounter with a metals fetishist, a man who has purposefully implanted pieces of scrap metal in his body. The salary man soon begins sprouting pieces of metal from various parts of his body, a change which is accompanied by increasingly nightmarish visions and bizarre, metal-filled ... Tetsuo is one of those movies which is truly unique. Born out of its director's fascination with the link between man and metal in his native Tokyo, he sets out to create a truly weird movie, sort of a live action manga version of a Cronenberg movie. Shot totally in black and white, with very little dialogue (so the subtitles shouldn't put anyone off), the plot is minimal, following a fetishist who injects himself with a metal rod. The same day, a plain salaryman worker cuts himself, and they both begin a bizarre transformation into a man/metal hybrid. Disturbing and powerful, but short (only about 65 mins), this unique fantasy is not for the faint ... Read the complete review
