"The 40 Year Old Virgin" was written by Judd Apatow and Steve Carell and released back in September 2005.

****Story line****

Andy (Steve Carell), the main character of this film, is a 'geeky' guy with the interests of a typical American teenager. Andy likes nothing more than playing computer games, playing the French horn, reading comics, collecting film/cartoon memorabilia and painting action figures.

David (Paul Rudd), Jay (Romany Malco), Cal (Seth Rogan) and Mooj (Gerry Bednob) are four employees of Smart Tech looking to arrange a poker game. Being a person down they reluctantly invite Andy to join them and are surprised when Andy accepts the offer.

During the poker game David, Jay and Cal begin discussing previous sexual conquests and are amazed to discover that Andy is still a virgin. The trio are informed that whilst growing up Andy has tried, but due to a few failures, he has given up. The trio takes it upon themselves to assist Andy and turn this 40 year old 'boy' in to a man.

David, Jay and Cal take Andy under their wing and start to help him out. Each character has their own methods to woo the ladies and after an information overload nothing seems to work for Andy.

One day, Trish (Catherine Keener) catches Andy's eye. After a lot of dithering he finally manages to ask her out and their relationship begins to flourish. David, Jay and Cal are made up that Andy is finally going to enjoy the finer things in life but have serious doubts over Andy and Trish's arrangement.

****My opinion****

When the 40 year old virgin was first released it didn't really appeal to me. Despite reading some good reviews about the film, and having it recommended by a few mates I never got round to it since there were other films that I wanted to check out first.

Having watched Knocked up, another Judd Apatow film that uses the Seth Rogan, Paul Rudd, Jonah Hill and Elizabeth Banks (although the latter two play a much smaller role in this film) I thought that I would watch this film.

Prior to watching this film I read many reviews and couldn't find a bad one so I thought I was on to a winner. Unfortunately, it seems like I was expecting far too much and ended up being disappointed.

Whilst I found some scenes mildly amusing there were no memorable moments or side splitting comedy scenes. I was surprised because I find Seth Rogan and Paul Rudd a great comedy duo (they were in "Knocked up") but the relationship was not evident in this film. I realise that this film was before "Knocked up" and can only assume that the Seth and Paul relationship has developed between this film and "The 40 Year Old Virgin"

In my opinion none of the actors gave memorable performances. Whilst there were no bad or poor performances, there weren't any that were mind blowing. All were pretty mediocre.

I thought that the story line was actually quite novel. There have been loads of films made whereby teenage boys are trying to lose their virginity but to have a film of a 40 year old man losing his, well it is quite novel. There was the potential to make this film great, but I don't think Apatow fully exploited it. The idea of a 40 year old virgin is quite comical in itself and this film could have been a great comedy.

I have never been interested in watching out takes or deleted scenes from films and have never seen the bonus features of any film. The same can be said of this film, therefore I am unable to comment upon the bonus features. However, based on the film itself, I'm guessing they are not going to be that memorable.
