The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle (DVD) ... DVD released 13 February, 2001 at Universal Studios / Features of the DVD: Anamorphic, Animated, Closed-captioned, Colour, DTS Surround Sound, DVD-Video, Live, NTSC, Widescreen / The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle suffers from a problem common among live-action movies that are based on beloved cartoon characters--the humans are never as flexible, unpredictable, or just plain goofy as their animated counterparts. In this blend of animation and live action, Rocky and Bullwinkle remain animated characters (trapped in our reality), while Boris and Natasha (Jason Alexander and Rene Russo), along with their boss, Fearless Leader (Robert De Niro), are transformed from cartoons to human reproductions when they escape from rerun land. They've come to our world to take it over; the FBI springs Rocky and Bullwinkle from the second dimension to stop them. But the writing in Kenneth Lonergan's script lacks the throw-away flair of the jokes that characterised Jay Ward's much-beloved animated series of the late 1950s and early 1960s. Part of the problem is that Russo, Alexander and De Niro are so obviously working at acting cartoonish, instead of simply being cartoons. And part is that the script rarely comes up with the kind of wonderful wordplay in which Ward specialised. The moose, as usual, gets all the best lines, but they're too few and far between to salvage this underachieving summer film. --Marshall Fine, Amazon.com

... of the "Are you talking to me?" bit from Taxi Driver. It's completely bizarre that De Niro saw fit to agree to appearing in the movie as Fearless Leader, and I guess the money must have been pretty attractive to tempt him in. The people behind Rocky and Bullwinkle were obviously very taken by the new genre that was created with Roger Rabbit, because they ape its every move and turn, but unfortunately do so without any of the flair or imagination. They go for a camp parody of the cartoon and are cl...more

Premium Review The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle (DVD): This is BAD (621 words)

The 1950's and 1960's saw Walt Disney breaking new ground by merging animation and live action into a single amalgamation if not seamlessly then at least convincingly. It was a revolutionary move that tickled the imagination and gave rise to all sorts of possibilities. For many years, such mingling and meshing went on, but really came to the fore in feature films with the extraordinary Who Framed Roger Rabbit? featuring Bob Hoskins and an unbelievably well endowed cartoon femme fatale. That film used the trickery artfully and with a fair amount of flair, and the cartoon sensibilities of its makers meant that almost exactly the right balance was struck. ...  Read the complete review

When it’s time for a cartoon Moose and Squirrel to save the world you know it’s time you woke up, got out of bed and did something useful. Except in this case it’s not a dream. It’s a Universal picture, which I suffered on New Year’s Eve. Yes, we thought that we’d buy a movie to watch with the kids so I logged onto FrontRow and duly forked out £2.99. If only I could turn the clock back to last year. Rocky & Bullwinkle has an extraordinary cast including Rene Russo, Robert DeNiro, Jason Alexander, Piper Perabo, Randy Quaid, Kel Mitchell, Kenan Thompson with the voices of June Foray and Keith Scott. The film is directed ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle (DVD): its the eye of the moose (332 words)

Not this isn't another Rocky sequel ! Rocky and Bullwinkle was a cartoon series from the sixties where the main characters were a flying squirrel and a big moose. Their arch enemies were Fearless Leader and his two minions Natasha and Boris. This film wasn't really well recieved in the USA but isn't half as bad as you'd think. Basically Fearless Leader has found a way into the real world and is taking over television with bad programming to brainwash the public. Enter Rocky and Bullwinkle to save the day !, they are enlisted to help by a scatty FBI agent Karen Sympathy. Boris and Natasha are always on their tale to make sure ...  Read the complete review

The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle USA 2000 Dir Des McAnuff This TRIBECA production ( a fearless leader effort in fact ), works on a number of levels. If like me you are a child of the 60?s, and ever spent anytime watching TV that wasn?t the Beeb Beeb C you will have come across R&B. The flying squirrel, and the slow-witted moose. An OK cartoon, but not in the same league as either Bugs Bunny or even the Wily E Coyote and the Road Runner. My seven year old with limited shared experience, but a genetic pre disposition to cartoons, like me, loved it. Still, the young De Niro must have been influenced by the simple toons showing the fearless ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle (DVD): What a load of Bullwinkle (163 words)

The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle If you have a wet Sunday afternoon to fill with the kids then I suggest you look a little further and take them elsewhere other than to the cinema to see this film. The characters Rocky, a squirrel and Bullwinkle a moose are an American export and thanks to the magic of cinema they sample life in the real world. Rocky and Bullwinkle are followed from their cartoon world by a Nazi-like fearless leader played by non other than Robert de Niro. I always had a lot of respect for Robert de Niro until watched this film. The film stars some good actors along side Robert de Niro namely René Russo and Randy Quaid. ...  Read the complete review
