Advantages: Great first time round, Great music
Disadvantages: Weraing thin now, Now really a true story
This film is based on the book written by Jay Anson, which is supposed to be based on a true story. Do not believe that this film is based on a true, although the film states it is based on a true story, it is a load of rubbish.
However, the part about the house's previous residents getting killed was true, the Lutz's story about them fleeing from the house after being attacked by ghosts eventually turned out to be a hoax.
The true story was that in the early hours of the morning on November 13th, 1974. The DeFeo family's eldest teenage son Ronald took a high powered rifle and killed both his parents, along with his two younger sisters and brothers whilst they slept in his family's house, which was located on Amityville River in Long Island New York.
Ronald Defoe pleaded insanity at his trial, claiming that he had heard voices in the house that had told him to do it. However, the judge was not convinced and rejected his plea, giving him six life sentences.
Two years later the Lutz family moved into the house but abandoned the property after only a few weeks. They then started spreading rumours that ghostly voices and evil spirits had scared them out, although their story changed several times. After their story appeared in print in the book The Amityville Horror A True story, which was then turned into a hit motion picture, it then emerged that the Lutz's stories where untrue.
So there you go, next time you watch this film remember it ain't real.
If you are still interested in this film the story goes like this George and Cathleen Lutz have just moved into their dream house with their three kids. They are so thrilled by the low-price they've bought it for, they seem to be totally unconcerned with the fact that one of it's previous occupants went crazy and killed his entire family with a hunting rifle.
As soon as they move in strange things start to happen. Doors and win
dows shut by themselves, and the windows always seem to be jammed. Masses of flies appear in a certain room, strange voices are heard and even the local vicar is violently ill after visiting them.
Eventually they discover a room behind a walled off area of the basement, which they believe was part of the old building that once stood there, which just so happened to be an institution for the criminally insane. They then discover an old well under the floorboards, which George Lutz falls into.
They eventually abandon the house after another strange happening.
This movie is great if you have not seen it at least five times. The spooky music is great, and really adds to the tension. Like I said there are lots of surprises are in store for you, if you have not seen it before. And remember it's not really true.
