Advantages: Original Comedy
Disadvantages: None
The Animal is one of the best romantic comedies that I have seen in recent years. It also has one of the most unique plots that I have ever seen. It is fairly short at 83 minutes but in at least it doesn’t drag the same gags out till they fall flat so in that respect it is short and sweet. Marvin (Rob Schneider) is a clerk in a small police station and is just managing to make ends meet. He is clumsy and constantly messes things up. He then has an accident and is one the brink of death but is saved by a mad doctor who uses animal parts to save his life. This has the comical side effect that Marvin starts to act like these animals in certain situations. He then miraculously has a more successful life in which he becomes a police officer and meets a lovely young lady (Colleen Haskell). The film follows the funny events that happen to Marvin as he adjusts to being half man half animal. The acting in this film is excellent. Rob Schneider has a particularly hard role to portray but in my opinion does a superb job. He has a comical face and body language that contributes to the visual humour and makes the film what it is. Colleen Haskell does a great job of being Marvin’s love interest. She portrays her character in a more realistic way, which gives a good contrast between the pair and adds to the humour. All the supporting cast also do an exceptional job. The comedy in this film is certainly original. Some of the scenes to highlight where the type of thing that it shows is Rob swimming like a dolphin while waving to a crowd of people. He also runs like a gazelle at speed of 60mph. This is just a few of the scenes but most of it is in the same style and make for humorous viewing. It makes for an amusing watch for us adults but is superb for children. I highly recommend that you give this one a look because it does contain some genuinely funny scenes. It is so radically different from anything that you have seen before t
hat it will be certain entertainment. Give a look.

- 30/11/01 Well more of a contradiction then. The point is that they are never in any way funny. |

- 29/11/01 Why is Romantic Comedy an oxymoron? Serious comedy would be an oxymoron but I don't think that particular genre is likely to be attepted (not intentionally!) |
