Advantages: Charlie Sheen at his best, Good storyline

Disadvantages: None that I can think of!

In THE ARRIVAL, Charlie Sheen plays a radio astronomer names Zane Ziminski who has been spending his time trying to find signs of life in space. When he receives a signal which definately shows that 'something is out there', he gives the evidence to his boss but his boss destroys it. Then the rest of his life (including his girlfriend, played by the gorgeous Teri Pole) gets completely turned upside down. As he investigates, he discovers a great many secrets concerning aliens, ice caps, and colonisation.

Released in 1996, at the height of X-FILES fever (on TV) and INDEPENDENCE DAY fever (in cinemas), THE ARRIVAL kind of sank without a trace, and this is a shame as it would certainly appeal to those people who like both of those products. Without a hugely inflated budget, the special effects are very good, and the storyline is highly engrossing.

Charlie Sheen is a joy to watch, and this is very pleasing as up to this time his career had been somewhat in the doldrums, although it certainly seems to have had a resurgence of late, with his taking over the lead role from Michael J. Fox in TV's excellent comedy SPIN CITY a couple of years ago.

Definately a fun watch, this film was followed by a sequel (called THE SECOND ARRIVAL - oh how original!) which featured neither Charlie Sheen on the screen nor David Twohy (the director of this film) behind it. I haven't yet had the opportunity to see this, although from the accounts that I've heard it's not too bad.
