Advantages: Cinematography, Score, Acting and character development.

Disadvantages: Length and slow pace.

The Assassination of Jesse James; a slow-paced Western which appears to be heavily influenced by Leone epics such as Once Upon a Time in the West. The plot is character driven and the film is heavily introspective; asking as many questions about the characters as it answers. Jesse James is the brooding 'veteran' of many robberies and idol to young Bob Ford. The James gang is ebbing, with the majority of its original members either in prison or under the ground. Hiring local hands for a train robbery, Bob Ford is afforded the opportunity to meet his life long hero. From the first meeting between the pair a sense of impending is cast over the entire film as the complex relationship is played out.

Brad Pitt, oft lambasted for his performance, provides a compelling account of Jesse James as a dark, paranoid and ultimately unhappy man. Casey Affleck, however, matches Pitt's abilities in a nuanced portrayal of Robert Ford, causing mixed emotions toward him from the audience. Besides the two leads the standard of acting is first rate, particularly Sam Rockwell who deftly weaves some humour while maintaining the serious edge and suspense of the film.

The real star of the film, however, is the scenery. Credit for which must be given to director Dominik and cinematographer Deakin. This film is so beautifully composed that it would be enjoyable to watch purely as a piece of moving art. Coupled with a masterful score by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis, the film is technically wonderful.

Unfortunately due to the length and slow pace this film will not be seen by as many people as it deserves. For those who appreciate character development and a well told story this film is superb. For those wishing for an adrenaline filled, brain turned off film... look elsewhere.

Summary: Technically superb, engrossing film covering the final days of Jesse James.
