The Astronaut's Wife (DVD) ... Theron ... / DVD released 08 February, 2000 at New Line Home Video / Features of the DVD: Anamorphic, Closed-captioned, Colour, Dolby, DVD-Video, NTSC, Widescreen / An intriguingly creepy premise but failed execution marks The Astronaut's Wife, a stylish and ultimately bland thriller about a pretty, young woman whose pretty, young astronaut husband comes back from his most recent space mission a little... odd. Before that fated space trip, Spencer (Johnny Depp) and Jillian (Charlize Theron) were a sunny, happy couple with matching blonde hairdos and a predilection for romping in the sack from extremely clever camera angles. However, after a communications blackout brings Spencer and his partner back down to earth prematurely, things are a little... peculiar. Spencer's partner goes bonkers and has a heart attack; on top of that, the partner's wife takes a fatal shower with a plugged-in radio. Getting out of the space biz, Spencer accepts a job as a corporate exec in New York, and as a welcome to the Big Apple for his comely wife, he molests her at the company cocktail party. Soon enough, Jillian is pregnant, but as you might expect, this pregnancy (twins, don't you know) is a little... unusual. Writer-director Rand Ravich takes his sweet time getting from extremely obvious plot point A to even more obvious plot point B, stretching out the development particulars in mind-numbing, suspense-killing fashion. Even Joe Morton, as a sinisterly psychotic NASA official, can't liven things up--you know you're in bad thriller territory when the biggest scare comes from a light suddenly being switched off. Theron, sporting a Mia Farrow in Rosemary's Baby style haircut, sleepwalks beautifully through the movie, but she did this role much, much better in The Devil's Advocate. Depp, with a cornpone Southern accent, is about as realistic as his peroxided hair. Ravich does the viewer no favours with a hackneyed ending straight out of a B-grade paperback horror novel in which the most shocking moment is Theron's sudden emergence as a brunette. With Blair Brown as a jaded socialite who offers to help out Theron by providing do-it-yourself abortion pills, and a lovely Donna Murphy as the suicidal wife who figures it all out before everyone else. -- Mark Englehart, Amazon.com

Newest Review: ... quiet. One soon dies in vaguely suspicious circumstances, and the film follows the wife of the other as she tries to find out ... more

... what happened during those two minutes. Up to this point, the film sounds great, and I was gripped during the start. I am a huge Johnny Depp fan, which makes me somewhat biased, but his excellent performance is one of the best things about an otherwise rather disappointing film. From a promising beginning, the plot never seems to go anywhere, and despite some good camera work and mildly scary moments, the film rapidly descends into farce as the story grows more and more ludicrous. An alternative ending is provided ...more

Crowned Review The Astronaut's Wife (DVD): Johnny Depp Haunted by Aliens (1096 words)
by - written on 19/01/09 (Very useful, 217 readings)
Rating:

Imagine this 'Johnny Depp haunted by aliens.' Shades, black coat, cigarillo in his mouth, hair short as never before, this is the cool look in which Depp is hurrying through the streets of New York. At the top of a subway staircase he stops quickly and grabs a black attache case which a young woman has put on the railing only seconds before. Carrying the explosive documents under his arm he disappears in the crowd........ Jillian and Spencer Armacost, played by Charlize Theron and Johnny, are the perfect couple, living the American dream, until one fearful day when Spencer, an astronaut on a routine Shuttle mission, mysteriously loses contact for two minutes ...  Read the complete review

The Astronauts Wife is one of those movies that doesn't really gather any real moss on it;s release and as a result you're not really inclined to watch it at the cinema or pass it by on rental. It's one of those films that you'll watch when it comes on TV because it has recognisable faces in the cast. The alternative is that you borrow it off someone you know and watch it, that way you're not spending any cash and the worst that can happen is that you waste a couple of hours away. Spencer and Jillian (Johnny Depp and Charlize Theron) are a happily married couple with everything going for them. Spencer is an astronaut who whilst on a routine ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review The Astronaut's Wife (DVD): Dreadful, just dreadful.  (544 words)

I wish I had never seen this film. I had actually wanted to see it at the cinema when it first came out, so I guess at least I should count my blessings that I managed to miss it until I had the benefit of a fastforward button. This film is slow, ponderous, cliched, and above all DULL. There really is nothing good that can be said for it. The plot concerns spaceman played by Johnny Depp, who comes back from a mission acting a little weird, possibly on account of a mysterious close encounter. His wife, played by Charlize Theron gets really wound up by his odd antics, and begins to suspect that something is very wrong. Unfortunately for her, she falls ...  Read the complete review

Rating:

The Astronauts wife is a haunting love story mixed with cut throat horror. It rides a razor edge of terror, imagination and what could happen in the deepest reaches of space. Spencer Armacost ( Johnny Depp) is a courageous, honoured NASA astronaut who is married to Jillian ( Charlize Theron) who is a well respected teacher. This was like a perfect marriage, so in love and so well connected. Spencer could feel and sense Jillian's love in space even though she was so far from him. Spencer was asked to go back for a repair job on one of NASA's satellites. While he was on the space shuttle, something inexplicable happens. Spencer and his co- ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review The Astronaut's Wife (DVD): Don't expect Alien or Species.... (231 words)

Rating:

This movie is not your average sci-fi movie, it doesn't rely on deadly lizard-like monsters to scare you or big chase scenes to impress. The whole movie is about the two characters played by Johnny Depp and Charlize Theron, and the affect of an 'unknown accident' while Depp was on the latest shuttle mission. All sorts of strange events occur to increase the wife's paranoia that something weird happened to her husband in 'those 2 minutes' where NASA lost contact with him. Charlize Theron is as excellent as she is beautiful, she plays the part well and pulls of the state of complete paranoia towards the end superbly. Depp would not have been ...  Read the complete review
