Throw a dart at a list of Martin Scorsese films and the chances are you'll hit one which should have won an Oscar. Before he finally won with The Departed, this was probably Scorsese's most blatant Oscar baiter: a story about a slight oddball who battles personal demons to triumph against the odds. Containing all the elements so beloved of Uncle Oscar, it should have been a shoo-in, yet was still overlooked for that coveted Best Director slot. Why show us the Howard Hughes had obsession to wash hands, this is not entertainment. I love the line said by Katherine Hepburn (Cate Blanchette) Don't let the press in, they will always ... DVD SPECIFIC ============ I filed my original review of this under the the VHS version (funnily filed under A, whereas this DVD version is under T). I've actually seen this version and am not sure how to delete the VHS review. As you would expect, the only distinguishing difference between the flics are the the kind of boring DVD extras you'd expect attached to a drama. There are a handful of "making of" features which include behind the scenes looks. Why I should care about how someone decided how to do the makeup and hair I do not know. Give these a miss. There are a few more discussions about Hugues himself and ... Read the complete review
