Advantages: Great plotline, great acting, great set
Disadvantages: Lack of other decent characters
Going through our DVD rental list I noticed this film was listed as available but we had it further down, so I decided to put it to the top as I quite fancied watching something other than a horror or a comedy.
The Bank Job was released earlier this year and ever since I saw it advertised I have wanted to watch it.
The film is based on the 1971 true story of the Baker Street robbery, Terry Leather (played by Jason Statham) is a London Car Dealer with a pretty colourful past and when old flame Martine (played by Saffron Burrows) gets in touch with him with details of a bank that will be unalarmed she convinces him to take on the biggest bank job of the century.
Terry is in debt and when he received the latest visit from 2 debt collectors who smash up several of his vehicles during the visit, Terry realises that he cannot pass up this chance of earning enough money to start a new life for his wife and two daughters.
Terry gathers a group of friends who he can trust to help get this job get done and after hiring out a shop next door but one to the bank they plan to rob the work begins as they plot to gain entry from underneath the banks floor.
Martine however is keeping a secret from Terry, this is that she was arrested with heroine when she returned back into Britain the only way that she can avoid jail is to convince Terry to take on this bank job so that she can get her hands on one particular safety deposit box which is contained within the bank's vault, a box that MI5 need to obtain due to its contents and the comprimising situation that the Royal Family could be in if it ever got into public circulation.
The film mainly revolves around the characters gaining access to the bank and the consequences that occur thereafter.
I found the film extremely tense in places and was definately and entertaining thriller from start to finish. Jason Statham was expertly cast as petty criminal Terry Leather and plays the role superbly.
The main plot of the storyline is not the actual bank job but what occurs afterwards and again the tension builds and builds to provide a great ending. The fact that this is based on a true story makes it all the more interesting and a trip down memory lane to the 70's is great that a modern day film is not remade in this era and is based back in the day that it originally occurred.
Many of the other characters in the film are not all that memorable, but to be honest the star of the film was only ever going to be Jason Statham.
The film also have some great comedy moments that will make you chuckle like when they are preparing to break into the bank's vault and one of the team orders some take-away from next door even though they are supposed to be keeping a low profile!
It's hard to know what to expect from this film and you cannot guess what is going to happen next and this adds to the suspense in the film as to whether they get caught breaking into the bank or not, or whether they manage to pull off the bank job.
As usual blu-ray makes the images more sharp and a much clearer picture and with surround sound I would much prefer to rent a blu-ray dvd and play at home with my own surround sound than share the film with others.
This film would definately appeal to a wide genre and is definately worth adding to a rental list.
Summary: A great film that won't disappoint.
