Advantages: well made, large budget
Disadvantages: ending a bit iffy
The Beach sounded like it was really not worth watching, considering Londons cinema prices (around £10), when it came out.
However, the other day my house mate rented it from the video store. Firstly it was not at all what I expected, from the previews it seemed like some wishy-washy romance story.
Shock-Horror, it's all rather drug influenced, therefore parts of it are wierd enough to keep you switched on. Leonardo offers a fairly typical performance, perfectly adequate and everything, it's just he always seems to play the same sort of characters.
The storyline basically involves Leonardo having a spliff with a crazy nutter, who gives him a map of a hidden island in Thailand, with the most pure beach and water you'll ever see, hense name. One thing leads to another, and Leo and two mates go off looking for it.
When they get there, they find half the island is a massive skunk plantation, and the other half a secret hippy colony. They live there for a while, a little sexual action, arguments, all goes horribly wrong, and not a very happy ending.
The ending in fact lets it down, should be more exciting.
The movie, as you'd expect at this budget, is well made in every way, just lacks a good storyline.
Anyway, a very watchable movie, although I couldn't really say it was a good 'un.
