The Benchwarmers is a hilarious low-brow comedy which sees Rob Schneider, Jon Heder and David Spade team up to create a family fun film that manages to have nothing but hugely crude and rude humour. The film sees the Gus (Rob Schneider) witness bullies torment three kids for playing basevall on their patch and this makes Gus decide to go and get out his friends Richie (David Spade) and Clark (Jon Heder) for a little game of baseball as they know what it is like to be the down and outs who are bullied. Clark, Ritchie and Gus never got picked for the baseball team. They were known as class nerds and always ended up sitting on the bench during games. This is where the film's title, 'Benchwarmers' comes from. Then, Mel, who is a friend of theirs and is a self made millionaire, hires Baseball pro Reggie Jackson to train the three of them to play against the sons of those who made his own life a misery by bullying him. The humour in this film is vulgar, infantile, offensive and down right mean. It is typical of Adam Sandler's sense of humour and lacks any kind of subtlety, or refinement. (Film only review) Recent news reports would have us believe that bullying is rife in schools today. When I was there it was part of life, especially for a geeky kid like me. It can be a very difficult situation for children and parents alike and should probably be tackled in a film. However, this is LA were bullying in films is nothing more than an excuse for good entertainment and for the good guy to finally get his own back. Why tackle the issues when you can have fart jokes about beef stew? Welcome to the world of ‘The Benchwarmers’.
