The Big Hit (DVD) ... Phillips ... / DVD released 06 June, 2005 at Uca Catalogue / Features of the DVD: Dubbed, PAL, Widescreen / Film fans might someday recognise 1997 and 1998 as the years Hong Kong came to Hollywood. Stars Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, Chow Yun-Fat, Jet Li and Michelle Yeogh all appeared in major Hollywood projects and directors John Woo, Ronny Yu and Tsui Hark directed Face/Off, Bride of Chucky and Knock Off, respectively. Another entry into this new era of entertainment is The Big Hit, directed by Che-Kirk Wong (who also directed Jackie Chan in Crime Story), executive produced by John Woo, and produced by Wesley Snipes. Mark Wahlberg leads this all-American cast in a played-for-laughs macho blowout. Rounding out the testosterone brigade are Lou Diamond Phillips (sprouting a gold-capped tooth and a dirty mouth), Bokeem Woodbine (who, according to this DVD's director audio track, wore extra socks where it counts), Antonio Sabàto Jr. and Avery Brooks. Wahlberg plays Melvin Smiley, a nice-guy hit man with an ulcer and a severe insecurity problem. He's short on cash due to the spending habits of his unsuspecting fiancée Pam (Christina Applegate) and his girlfriend-on-the-sly Chantel (Lela Rochon). He and his crew decide to do a little freelancing and cook up their own heist to make a little mo' money--specifically by kidnapping Keiko (China Chow), the daughter of a Japanese businessman whom they target for ransom. Little do they know her dad is broke and she's the goddaughter of their boss. The Big Hit has action scenes aplenty (one of the stunt co-ordinators worked on Woo's The Killer and Bullet in the Head) and the same cornball sense of humour as other films in the Hong Kong action genre. Slick pacing and over-the-top humour made this movie a miss with the critics but a fun ride for fans of Hong Kong-styled action. --Shannon Gee

We also get a comic insight into his personal life, both with his money-snatching girlfriend and manic fiancée (whose parents, incidentally, are even more manic). The story is far from original, and barely interesting. The plot is clearly geared towards enhancing the comic elements of the film rather than the potentially thriller-esque aspects. Now I'm not a fan of comedy films, so I approached this with caution. I wanted to see it as an action film, not a comedy. This...more

Well there's no chance The Big Hit will make it onto any top 100 film lists - it is a fairly standard and uninteresting action comedy. Yet it has some impressive qualities, and is well worth an entertaining watch (as long as you remember the popcorn and the beer). The story follows a hitman / kidnapper (Mark Whalberg) and the three other members of his gang, who do jobs for the local crime boss. After a successful 'hit' in a hotel, bringing with it plenty of action and a splash of comedy, the group kidnap the daughter of a wealthy local. Naturally not all goes to plan, and by the end Whalberg's character finds himself being chased by pretty ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review The Big Hit (DVD): Strange Action Comedy (200 words)

I watched this film this evening on sky digital and I thought it was ridiculous. The story line was a bit typical for action movies, all based on a kidnap of a rich guy's daughter. What followed in the plot was outragous. Without giving too much away, the main guy who is trying to catch the kidnapper is killed over and over again but somehow survives each time. The makers of this film have you dodgy special effects to make the characters achieve the impossible, like jumping really high. There are parts of this film which are funny, there are parts which were made to be funny that aren't and there a bits which just aren't funny at ...  Read the complete review
