Advantages: Superb picture quality!!, Bogart at his finest!!, Film noir at its beat!!!
Disadvantages: None at all!!
Humphrey Bogart .... Philip Marlowe Lauren Bacall .... Vivian Sternwood Rutledge John Ridgely .... Eddie Mars Martha Vickers .... Carmen Sternwood Dorothy Malone .... Acme Bookstore proprietress Peggy Knudsen .... Mona Mars Regis Toomey .... Chief Insp. Bernie Ohls (District Attorney's Office) Charles Waldron .... Gen. Sternwood Charles D. Brown .... Norris (Sternwood's butler) Bob Steele .... Canino (Mars' henchman) Elisha Cook Jr. .... Harry Jones Louis Jean Heydt .... Joe Brody Director.... Howard Hawks Bogart doesn't get much better than this. Based on Raymond Chandlers classic novel this is a tightly paced detective thriller which never lets up all the way through. ......Very complexly plotted ...so you'll need to have your wits about you when watching....i would find it extremely difficult to give you a plot rundown so i'll skip this one.....it is said by the way that even the writer ....when asked who killed the butler...didn't even know the answer! There's a great teaming up again with Lauren Bacall and excellent character actors along the way such as Elisha Cook Jr . Also Dorothy malone in that wonderfull scene in the bookstore. By the way the scene where Humphrey Bogart poses as an eccentric collector of rare books and turns his hat up , wears dark glasses......... was his own idea and not John Hustons. The dialogue crackles and this is one film i've seen so many times and enjoyed it even more on each repeated viewing..........this is definitely one of my favourite film noir's of all time. As a matter of interest Dick Powell the former crooner turned actor also played Phillip Marlowe in the film 'Farewell My Lovely' and very near as good it was too.......some say better........but for me there's only one Bogart!!!!!!!!!!!! Enjoy!!! The DVD is superbly remastered with top notch pict
ure quality and also carries the original theatrical trailer which is a nice extra to have.

ickkate - 13.06.04 It is so wonderful to see someone reviewing older films on here, but as someone who hasn't seen this, I would love to know more about the film and your thoughts. I end up feeling frustrated, because I can tell you know and pick up on a lot. Please write more without giving away the plot! I'd also love to know if there are any DVD extras, if they are any good, and why? |
