The Big Tease (DVD)

Description: Genre: Comedy / Theatrical Release: 2000 / Director: Kevin Allen / Actors: Craig Ferguson, Nina Siemaszko ... / DVD ... more
The Big Tease (DVD) ... released 12 March, 2001 at Warner Home Video / Features of the DVD: Full Screen, PAL, Widescreen / Anyone who's suffered the misfortune of stumbling upon Kevin Allen's nauseous debut Twin Town--a ramshackle Trainspotting transposed to the cinematic slag heap of Swansea--will be pleasantly surprised by this gentle sophomore effort. The Big Tease follows gay Glaswegian hairdresser Crawford Mackenzie (Craig Ferguson), a flamboyant character who stays just the right side of caricature, as he heads to LA to represent bonny Scotland in the World Freestyle Hairdressing Championship. Only there's a hitch: once in Hollywood, Crawford discovers he's only been invited to be a spectator at the event, which means the huge hotel bill he's racked up will have to come out of his own pocket. Undeterred, the stubborn stylist sets about gaining a union card and, ultimately, entry to the competition, frantically trying to establish Beverly Hills contacts with a mind to pulling a few much-needed strings. Allen's movie is an interesting hybrid, half Hollywood satire (the greed, the self-importance, the insincerity) and half sports-movie with a twist (events inevitably lead to a climactic showdown, as Crawford goes blade-to-blade with the wonderfully pompous Norwegian champ). And yet, by and large, it works, the loquacious Ferguson giving us someone to hold onto in a slippery world populated by disdainful creeps, his probity alone ensuring our heartfelt support come competition night. The filmmakers' decision to opt for a "mockumentary" format à la The Blair Witch Project and Drop Dead Gorgeous also pays dividends, for it is Crawford's candid confessions to camera that allow us to navigate beyond his carefully constructed plumage and discover the person beneath.--Jamie Graham

... trying desperately to compete in a hair-cutting contest? Craig Ferguson is magnificent, campy, and deliciously over-the-top (watch him singing "California Dreamin'" on his hotel room balcony and you'll see what I mean). Frances Fisher, as his cohort, is equally wonderful (and her exercise machine!!!). And of course Mary McCormack who caught my attention during her brief run as Sally Bowles in Broadway's "Cabaret" last year - she was wonderful (and I've seen the show 16 times to date)....more

Premium Review The Big Tease (DVD): The Big Tease (214 words)

You have GOT to see this film!!!!!!!!!! What a cracker. Starring Craig Ferguson as the camp hairdresser who goes off to America thinking he's taking part in a 'hair off' only to discover that he had only, in fact, been invited to be part of the audience. He has a reporter with him at all times who is making a documentary about the hairdresser from Scotland who is 'taking on the world' and the two of thm get into all sorts of scrapes in L.A. The film therefore is about how he tries (by hook or by crook) to wheedle himself into the contest to become the greatest stylist in the world. It doesn't *sound* that funny but the film is a ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Small movie, big laughs (204 words)

I had not heard about THE BIG TEASE before I saw it. I was not familiar with its star, Craig Ferguson. My expectations, therefore, were fairly low. What a nice surprise this movie turned out to be. It feels like a small movie, but delivers big laughs. The cast features a perfect mixture of unknowns, believable character actors, and unexpected cameos. The story is well-paced for a running time no longer than it needs to be (now THAT's refreshing). The Scottish dialect can be hard to decipher for the untrained ear, so a few punch lines fall flat. And while the documentary style helps moves the story along (why waste time on character background when ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review The Big Tease (DVD): It's time for the hair-off! (184 words)

This film is odd. It reminds me of 'Strictly Ballroom' in that you don't quite feel comfortable with watching it because in a way , you are half-cringing at what the characters are going to do next. Craig Ferguson gives a performance of a lifetime with his interesting rendition of 'California Dreaming' by the Mammas and the Papas. I had just taken a mouthful of vodka and orange and sprayed it everywhere because i was laughing so much. I'm not sure if he convinces me as a camp hairdresser or not though, maybe that's because he looks as though he might start laughing any moment. My own 'camp hairdresser' became quite ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review great mockumentary (171 words)

I LOVE mockumentaries. "Waiting For Guffman," is one of my all-time favorite movies. "Drop Dead Gorgeous," is another. "The Big Tease," may not be as funny as those two, but it's still a great movie. How can one NOT be entertained by a Scottish hairdresser in California for the first time, trying desperately to compete in a hair-cutting contest? Craig Ferguson is magnificent, campy, and deliciously over-the-top (watch him singing "California Dreamin'" on his hotel room balcony and you'll see what I mean).
