Terrifyingly Boring (The Blair Witch Project (DVD))
Advantages: - Disadvantages: -
This film is frightening all right...quite frighteningly dull. And that is truely where the fear factor ends. As a dedicated seeker of cinema shocks and disturbing atmosfear, it seemed the BWP was the film for me. How wrong. I like the idea of the finding of raw film footage and jerky handheld camera work. It has great potential for creepy situations and hairs on the back of your neck pricking up. Sadly it is completely blown here, with little of the opportunity to frighten taken. A real camping trip in a forest would actually be more scarey than this tosh. Add that to the fact that the three protagonists are so compelling unlikeable, (especially the girl) that one can't help but root for whatever is stalking them in the woods, and the end result is pointless in the extreme. Okay there is one point....marketing heaven. Studio execs somewhere must be toasting the gullable hype-led public after this one. The idea of raw film footage being found after a tradegy is not original: it appears in the films Cannibal Holocost and The Last Broadcast (recently screened on British TV), both of which use the idea in far superior fashion (though for very different reasons!). BWP did nothing for me, except bore me for 90 minutes and rip me off with its lame short-change ending. No, I do not want spoon fed every detail of the plot, but I want more than nothing at all at pay back time. This exceeds even the Matrix in audacity, and I do not mean that in a good way. If you want disturbing psychological horror, see the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. An essential-view film that I believe the BWP tries desperately to ape (albeit with the addition of the hand held camera) but fails miserably. In short, not worth your time. Really, trust me.
