Advantages: tense, gripping
Disadvantages: short, they should just follow the river out.
Do I or dont I write a review of the Blair Witch? I spent a while thinking about this question. Its already been reviewed over a hundred times so what is there to say that hasnt already been said? well..probably not a lot but I dont care. You either love it or you hate it? Balls..this aint marmite here, this is film. You can learn to like it. I didn't like 'Groundhog Day' when I first saw it, but now I love it. Music is allowed to 'grow' on you, so why not film? Food tastes better with time..you get the idea. Personally I thought this film was as good as the hype when I first saw it. And my god was there alot of hype. www.theblairwitch.com was a phenomenon long before the film. A website set up by the makers to advertise their film, under the premise that it was a real story. Like something you read in the newspaper. It worked. Who hasn't heard of this film? Now I can hear the bloody film critics, students, everyman and his dog. "its rubbish, Its just hype man. Yeah and its in black and white". Dont believe it, this film is one of the best 'horror' films there is. No question. Normally a trip to the cinema involves dipsh*ts talking and laughing all the way through. Kids playing the fool, talking, whispering, throwing popcorn. I saw The Blair witch in a nearly full cinema, You could have heard a pin drop. What is horror? On the whole, films do not 'scare' you. Granted, if you watch them when your 12, then yes they are truly scary. But, as an adult, if you are scared by most films, you have a deep underlying psychological problem (dont leave comments, im not saying you cant dislike horror, im just saying that you are not actually SCARED. The feelings of fear you get after, in your bed, are a result of your imagination. The mind, that is scary.). The Blair Witch leaves you with sweaty palms and white knuckles. I cant say if it is genuine 'fear', per
haps 'tense' is a better word. The Plot: 'In october 1994 three student filmmakers dissapeared in the woods near Burkittsville, Maryland while shooting a documentary....A year later their footage was found' Thats it. The, mostly, black and white film is their footage. It s filmed on super 8, so looks grainy and cheap. But this is good. It was made on a cheap budget. If it was done on hi-tec equipment, it wouldnt have had the same effect. The 3 film makers get lost in a wood and chased by the blair witch. Its quite short so too much detail may spoil the experience. What I can say is this: Have you ever been camping in a wood? Not on a campsite, but on your own with a few mates? Its the kind of thing you do as kids? Yes? You know that feeling of dread that you could work yourself up into over the slightest noise? Thats this film magnified. Remember when you were camping and when you stand outside your tent and it feels like you are incased by darkness. Its almost like there is a circle around you, everything outside this circle is bad, well that is this film. It is outside that circle. You dont know what is there, just that it is evil. It evokes fears of the unknown, child time fears. If you dont know what i mean, if you have never been camping, then stand in a dark room, see how long before your imagination takes over. Im trying to give you a sense of what this film is, not a description. I will give anyone a tener who will go camping after watching this film, and STAY out all night. If you were unfortunate enough to miss it at the cinema, video does not give it full justice. To try and replicate the cinema, stay up for a few days then watch on your own, on as big a tv as you can, very loud. You have been warned. Darkly, deliciously, disturbing. Cast: Heather Donahue Michael Williams Joshua Leonard Blairwitch 2 is garbage. If yo
u like this: try something a bit more lighthearted next time, maybe 'gone with the wind' or something.
