Many should remember the original Blob made in the 50's starring Steve McQueen. It's an interesting tale of horror and sci-fi about an alien lifeform crashing to earth in the form of a jelly. This small intelligent jam will soon become the world's greatest threat as it grows after it digests anything it touches.

I remember seeing this film on the Double Feature Thriller on Saturday afternoons. In the late eighties a remake came out that starred Matt Dillon as a small town bad boy. I was happy to see that most of the noteable parts form the original screenplay were adapted into this well done remake.

We open with an old hermit witnessing a meteorite hitting the ground nearby. When he investigates he finds a white jelly near the site and uses a stick to probe it. He foolishly lets the intelligent jelly crawl up the stick to attach itself to his hand. Once attached the blob begins to break your flesh down like it was acid and absorbs your energy. This is why the blob starts out white but gradually gets redder....and much, much bigger.

We get to watch as scores of unsuspecting victims fall prey to this unstoppable blob. If it touches you, you're dead and a cruel fate awaits you. Nothing will get it off and it's already starting to eat at you. The gore effects were well done in this film. You really get the feeling that this thing hurts as it absorbs you. I can' help but to be reminded of the blob everytime I watch 'The Raft' from Creepshow 2.

As the blob reaches enormous proportions, it takes lives here and there, travelling in the open for nothing can stop it. The government comes in to quarantine the town, labelling it a virus. We find that this particular Blob is man made. An experiment gone very, very bad. Those who've seen the original should know how they destroy the Blob. But, surprisingly, the end of this film keeps it open for a seq
uel.

Great op. I liked this film and thought it kept one on the edge of the seat. Of course I saw it when it first came out. Thought Steve McQueen did a great acting job in it.
