The Bourne Identity is a Spy thriller, released in 2002, and is based on the Robert Ludlum novel of the same name. It is directed by Doug Liman and stars Matt Damon as Jason Bourne, a rouge ex-CIA black opps agent who suffers from both PTSD (Posttraumatic Stress Disorder) and retrograde amnesia.
*Synopsis*
Italian fishermen find a mysterious man floating in the Mediterranean sea, with two gunshot wounds in his back and a mysterious number for a Swiss safe despoist box in his hip. Under the care of the ships doctor, the man recovers, only to find that he has amnesia and can't remeber anything about his life, including his name and family. He can however speak several langages fluently, read ship navigation and tie fancy ship knots into rope.
Going under the name Jason Bourne-the first passport that he found- he along with his 'driver' Marie try to uncover the consipacy with the mysterious 'Treadstone' organisation within the CIA; along with they hope, uncovering Bourne's true identity.
*My Opinon*
I've never read the novel (apparently they are the complete opposite to the films) but I was suprised by just how much I enjoyed this film.
Straight away the plot is a good one. Matt Damon plays the role of Bourne perfectly, and the Bourne series is definatley some (if not the best) of his career. Supporting cast of Franka Potente, who is fab in her role of Marie, who leaves her old life behind to go on this almost lifechanging experience with Bourne. The relationship between the two is excellent and almost ever changing, first a business deal (Bourne paying Marie to drive him to Paris), then as a teacher/pupil relationship (Bourne teaching Marie a few tips about being invisable) to finally a friendship/relationship towards the end of the film.
The two shady bad guys in the CIA, played excellently by Brian Cox and Chris Cooper are given just enough screen time to make them interesting as baddies yet not overdoing it or only seeing them once or twice before the good guy defeats them.
The action squences are well done, my favourite was the stairwell shootout towards the end of the movie and the fantastic car chase which rivals any other that is on the market again.
Overall, it could have been an ok adaptation of a respectable novel yet the qualtiy of the directing and of the acting by the entire cast proves that some films just are better than the books.
