Advantages: The modern day superspy, James Bond for the 21st century
"The Bourne Identity" is a 2002 american action movie directed by Doug Liman and starring Matt Damon, Franka Potente, Chris Cooper, Clive Owen and Brian Cox.
An Italian fishing boat on a fishing trip off the coast of Marseille, France notice a body floating in the water ( Matt Damon ) with a distress beacon flashing, once they bring it aboard they notice two bullet holes but also the person is alive, the ships doctor manages to retrieve the bullets and the man regains consciousness, however he has no memory of who he is or how he got to be there, and the only evidence to help him is a tiny laser projector surgically implanted in his hip that contains the number to a safety deposit box in Zurich Switzerland.
After he lands ashore he makes his way to Zurich and very quickly discovers his name to be Jason Bourne, he also discovers being very proficient in hand to hand combat skills after an encounter with two policemen and discovers he is bi-lingual, meanwhile we learn he is a covert assassin for the CIA who failed in a mission to assassinate a top political figure under a mission named "Treadstone" and the CIA begin a manhunt to retrieve their man by any means necessary, all the while Jason must find out who he is and how he got to this point, along the way enlisting the help of a young woman named Marie ( Franka Potente )
"The Bourne Identity" is as I described in my title the reason James Bond movies now are more gritty and realistic with an emphasis on Bond being well versed in hand to hand combat, as when Bourne came along Bond movies were still being shot very much as they were in the 70's and 80's relying on James being suave and sophisticated and taking care of enemies with little physical involvement, then we see Jason Bourne, also a spy ( technically ) but a real human being with flaws and emotion and someone who is clearly well trained in every form of physical combat there is.
I love the way Bourne is shot, the camera work is shaky and makes you feel as though you're right there with the characters on the streets or in particular in the car while they're being chased through the streets of paris, I love the soundtrack and the gritty incidental music that fits the mood of each scene perfectly, and I love the storyline with Jason not knowing who he is, or indeed the audience not learning the main characters name until a good time into the movie.
Doug Liman did a great job of transporting Jason Bourne from the books to the big screen, I've never read the books and I understand that there are some differences between the movie version and the written version but nonetheless the character stands up and is truly one of the great movie good guys of the 21st century, and Matt Damon deserves all the credit for that, he turns Jason Bourne into a believable, capable hero and the kind of guy who could live next door to you and you would never suspect that he is a CIA assassin.
If you're a fan of action movies then this will fit the bill perfectly, if you're a fan of spy stuff then again this will do exactly what you need it to and if you're just a casual moviegoer then you'll certainly be entertained for 118 Minutes.
Highly recommended for everyone !!
Summary: One of the best action thrillers of the last 10 years !
