Advantages: great acting
Disadvantages: its sad and will upset you!
I went to see this film in 2008 (last year), when it was released. I have also read the book and I can't choose which I think is the best but I have to say that both are truly moving and intriguing.
Plot: The plot is based around the life of an eight year German called Bruno. The film focuses on his life after he moves next door to a concentration camp as a result of his fathers role of a kommandant. Bruno looks out of his bedroom window on a daily basis and thinks that the camp is a farm... he asks many questions but his mother lies to him as she tries to protect his innocence. He is warned not to go exploring but inevitably ends up going to see what is going on at the 'farm'. When he arrives at the fence, he is shocked to see a people in 'striped pyjamas' and he sees a little boy who is the same age as him on the other side of the fence, also in 'striped pyjamas'. This little boy is called Schmuel and he is so cute! Bruno forms a friendship with the little boy and visits him every day to give him food as he is starving. The only thing that is separating the two children is the fence, so Bruno plots with Schmeul to get him some pyjamas too and he will dig under the fence to held find Schmeuls family, who have been gassed. By the time Bruno's faimly realise he is missing, will he be found in time?
This film really is moving and highlights some of the shocking things that were occuring in the war. It focuses on how even childrens innocence could become corrupted at such a shocking time...as we see Gretel (Bruno's sister) enjoy what is going on aroung her as she plasters her room with Nazi posters and bins all of her dolls. I would recommend this film for ages ten and over... it is moving so be prepared!
Summary: well worth the watch...realistic and interesting
