In 1995 Johnny Depp was already an actor with a well respected pedigree but he had always had a longing to direct his full feature. It was an aspect of his career that he had not pursued although he had directed a clutch of music videos for and within his own circle of friends and colleagues. He shared the directing honours, for instance, for Red Hot Chilli Pepper John Frusciante's first album with Gibby Hanes; he directed another for Shane MacGowan and the Pogues and he even found time to direct a couple of film shorts, one a 12 minute journey through a house filled with junk backed by a rock 'n' roll soundtrack, and the other, an eight minute anti-drug documentary.
