The Bucket List (DVD)
Advantages: Nice story, great actors
Disadvantages: Poor special effects
The Bucket List was released in 2007 and was directed by Rob Reiner. The main characters of the film are played by Morgan Freeman who plays Carter Chambers and Jack Nicholson who plays Edward Cole.
The two main characters could not be any more different! Carter is a vehicle mechanic who has extraordinary general knowledge and loves his trivia and quiz shows and is a real family man. Edward on the other hand is a billionaire who runs a hospital and has been married numerous times but is not the settling down type! The two men meet when it turns out they have to share a hospital ward after they are both diagnosed with terminal cancer.
The two men begin to develop an unlikely friendship and Carter starts to write his 'bucket list' which is basically a list of things that he wants to do before he dies. Edward suggests that they carry out the list together and he offers to pay for all the expenses. Carter's wife is not too happy about losing some of the precious time she has left with her dying husband to a virtual stranger but the two embark on their travels round the world together!
I must confess that Morgan and Jack are two of my favourite actors of all time. The comedy timing of Jack is second to none and he makes many parts of the film funny without even trying, just his expressions make me chuckle! You really get to know these two characters at the start of the film and they are both very likeable in their own unique ways. The friendship that they develop is really a show of how opposites attract! The two travel all round the world in Edwards's private jet and see sites ranging from the Pyramids to lions in Africa. I must confess that there are some really cheesy moments in the film but I still couldn't help but love it!
The acting is as good as you would expect from these two big names however I do not feel that the characters really stretched the actors to even half their capabilities. As much as I enjoyed the film I couldn't help but feel that their talents were a bit wasted. One of the other down points of the film is the special effects, it was like going back in time thirty years they were so bad! Scenes such as the skydiving one really show how poor the special effects are.
Overall I really enjoyed the film despite balling my eyes out at the end! If you are a fan of these actors I would definitely recommend it but don't expect to see any Oscar winning performances or outstanding special effects! I guess that the moral of the story is that if you are going to get a terminal illness make sure that you share a hospital ward with a billionaire that can make you laugh! Realistic? No, but a great film!
Summary: Definately worth a watch!
