This has to be one of my all time favourite comedies. The Burbs came out way back in 1989. I can't believe it's twenty years since this film came out! The film stars Tom Hanks when he wasn't such a serious actor, he was just good at those classic comedy roles. Described as a dark comedy, would say the Burbs is just that. The story is set in an American town, or more specifically the suburbs of an American town. Hence the name 'Burbs'. Ray Peterson (Tom Hanks) has got the week off work and just wants to get some relaxation. However he has some very strange new neighbours. "In Southeast Asia, we'd call this kind of thing bad karma." Back in 1989, Tom Hanks had only just risen to prominence on the silver screen with his mostly light comedic efforts, including "Splash", "Bachelor Party", "Dragnet" and "Big", as well as opposite Jackie Gleason in the haunting "Nothing in Common". "The 'burbs" would certainly not be a big turning point in his career, but it is certainly one of his most enjoyable movies, as well as one of my favourites.
