Advantages: A great slasher film

Disadvantages: None, but if you hate the genre, stay away

'The Burning' has been knocked by many, but to my mind, its a classic slasher film. I guess from the start, that puts some people off, and rightly so: if you don't like slasher films, there's not a chance in hell you'll like this. But if you're fond of a bit of slice and dice, 'The Burning' is right up there with 'Friday the 13th' parts 1-4, and all the other early 80's forest fear greats.
The plot is......well, i'd love to say that it offered something original. But I can't back that up. Summer camp prank goes wrong....janitor hideously disfigured......returns to the camp several years later, with a large pair of pruning shears and revenge on his mind......suspiciously non-teenage campers and counsellers die. What more could you ask for ?
Ok, how about a couple of up and coming stars? Holly Hunter and Jason alexander? This film has them both.
Plenty of carnage candy? This film has much mayhem, and a high gore score.
A shrieking electronic soundtrack? Rick Wakeman, step up and take a bow.
This film even has the classic campfire sequence which was imitated in countless other such films. The killer, 'Cropsy' is quite a dapper fellow, with his fine filthy black coat, and a ludictous FX-job for a face. The film really does have an evocative atmosphere of summer camp life, as anyone who has visited such an establishment can testify.
Ok, so its not original. But its sleazy, bloody, and very amusing. Slasher fans take note.

Summary:
