Advantages: None.
Disadvantages: Everything.
My friend at work is always raving on about this film ‘the Business’ and although I do think the main reason she likes it is because she fancies Danny Dyer, I do actually genuinely believe she thinks it is the best film ever made from how much she goes on about it. Then another friend saw it and said how great it was so I decided to see what all of the fuss was about and rent it myself to give it a go. I found it a very watchable film but nothing special and afterwards it is fading out of my memory quite fast and I will attempt to tell you why this is so.
-----
The Film:
Frankie a young man and fed up with his abusive father and the way that he treats his mother actually does something about it. Then fed up with London and his life and the fact that he will get into a lot of trouble he decides to go to Spain to begin a new life on the recommendation of a friend. He is armed with a bag in which he is told are just biscuits and off he goes.
While there he gets involved with Charlie, a well renowned crime lord and from there he gets involved with his gang comprising of another three people who are equally as bad as Charlie. Although he is not really the kind of guy to get into drugs crime scandals he soon gets corrupted by the other guys and also the greed for lots of money and the lifestyle that comes with it.
Verdict on the Story:
When you read the concept it does sound ok but again I am sure you are getting that familiar feeling as I did because it has been done now so many times before. Then the actual way the film is shot is exactly the same as films such as Lock Stock which means it is nothing new at all. In fact the only difference is that this film is set in the 1980’s but apart from that you will probably have seen it all before.
The actual story as it plays through the film is quite annoying as the pace is all over the place and the fact that it is so predictable although they are trying to make it quite clever just gets on your nerves. The other thing is that it really doesn’t manage to keep your attention. For one the swearing in this film is unbelievable and I usually don’t mind it but it was ridiculous with the ‘C’ word being used in nearly every sentence. Then there are not that many decent scenes so it is very boring. Definitely not a film to put your whole attention on as it is not worth it.

Cast and Characters:
Danny Dyer – Frankie
Tamer Hassan – Charlie
Georgina Chapman – Carly
Geoff Bell – Sammy
Dan Mead – Danny
Eddie Webber – Ronnie
Verdict on the Cast and Characters:
Ok so the cast is ok I suppose but they do annoy me a little. They have got people who not necessarily can act but who fits the picture on what they think rough British with foul mouths would look like. Danny Dyer does manage to keep his lead role very well but he just didn’t fit the part the whole way through in my opinion although in way I think that might be what the film were going for. I have to say though that for this type of film the casting is ok.
The characters I absolutely hate though as I did think they were absolutely rubbish due to the fact that they were annoying, stereotypical, predictable and nothing new at all. They are unlike able completely because although you get some back story there is simply nothing to like about them. You don’t get to identify with them, you don’t get to know them and I just basically hated every single one. I don’t think any of them are memorable and this is down to the script and them basically trying to be like the Lock Stock characters and failing.

Special Features:
Well I am such an avid review writer that I even suffered through the features after the film. The commentary seemed to actually be ok although to be honest I only watched about fifteen minutes as I really couldn’t sit through any more without tearing my hair out. Danny Dyer is in involved and he is actually quite the comedian when describing the fashions and what it was like in this film. The alternate ending is not bad actually and I preferred it to the one they had chosen.
Then there is a feature on the making of which again I only watched about five minutes of but it was alright and basically showed your bog standard stuff. Deleted scenes are rubbish and more annoying than any of the film so that annoyed me even more. The photograph gallery I actually enjoyed having a scroll through though as I can say the film was rubbish but the scenery and the clothes were great.
There is a swear counter which is actually quite funny as when you watch the film you cant believe how much swearing there is, this is an Easter egg though so you have to hunt for it. There are cast and crew biographies which is quite good because I knew I had seen some of the cast out of other things.
-----
Verdict:
Well I didn’t think much of this film at all as I thought the story was not interesting, the way that the film was shot was annoying as it has all been seen before and I think the characters are just ridiculously bad, then add this to the fact that the script thinks that swearing is very cool and you have a very bad film in my eyes. My fiancé thought it was ok but it didn’t keep his attention and he thought it was just so boring.
In conclusion I am going to give it one star and I honestly do not think it even deserves that. I found it that annoying and boring I couldn’t wait for it to finish and I also found the constant swearing found it very hard to watch. It didn’t help that I hated all of the characters and I do usually like films like this but this one just seems to be using the same old story and format and dressing it up in the 1980’s to make it seem different. Me personally I would not recommend it.
Thanks for reading.
