Advantages: unique storyline
Disadvantages: plot not very indepth - sit back and enjoy
I saw the Butterfly Effect a few years ago and thought it was ok despite it not being a strong cast or having done that well at the box office. I watched it again recently and I still really like it!
The plot follows the story of Evan, a kid whose dad is locked up in a mental institution and who suffers from blackouts. We see certain parts and events of his life up until he is in his twenties (played by Ashton Kutcher). Here he starts rereading his journals that he kept as a kid and soon finds out that through this he can travel back into his body at whatever age he is reading about and 'recorrect' certain events. This, of course, has certain implications on the people around him and he starts a quest trying to help everyone, something he finds to be very hard! The relevance of the black outs is also explained which is something i found interesting.
A great story that explores something we all do; regret and frustration over the inability to alter one's past. This film has many cliched morals along the lines of "some things are best left alone" and "whats meant to be is meant to be" but is still very interesting. A very enlightening film that makes you think back to key points in your own life and, even though you were possibly unaware of them at the time, the implications they cause to get you where you are now.
According to imdb.com; this film "was one of the most widely read unproduced scripts in the industry. It wasn't until Ashton Kutcher stepped up to executive produce the movie that it was greenlit." This is a little surprising seing as i regard this film to have a pretty unique idea compared to a lot of films that are remakes or are simply unoriginal. The whole time travel things isn't explained in detail as one would probably expect, making this a film one of those you just have to accept, sit back and enjoy. If you can that you have an entertaining and original film to watch. Ashton Kutcher isn't really a favourite actor of mine and all i see him as is "Demi Moore's husband" and that annoying guy from 'Punk'd' but you have to give him credit for picking up the script and working with it.
Summary: Evan has realised he can change his past, this has a few implications!

- 23/06/09 This film has one of the BEST lines!! Too rude to put on here but I'm referring to the part where he's stuck in prison and he's been approached with a choice! :-) |
