... mediocrity. Conrad and Sally Walden (Spencer Breslin and Dakota Fanning) are two kids who are rather bored due to being left home alone while it is raining. However, The Cat in the Hat (Myers) shows up on their front door and shows off his utterly manic ways, showing them what it's like to have an imagination and use it. Their mother (Kelly Preston) actively encourages that they don't use this part of their brains, so it's a pleasing wake up call for them, but they then have to face up to the reality that The Cat has...more

Crowned Review The Cat In the Hat (2004) (DVD): The Cat's on the Fence, Yeah baby! (1497 words)
by - written on 29/01/05 (Very useful, 95 readings)
Rating:

Children's movies have never had it so good. What with the live action "Thunderbirds" a moderate success, the latest instalment of live action Scooby Doo doing reasonable numbers and a real time follow up to the Brian Grazer produced "The Grinch" in the shape of "The Cat in the Hat", it seems evident that Hollywood has re-discovered the virtues of pester power. I must admit, it was with a certain trepidation that I took the wee ones to see this particular movie a few months ago. Savaged in the US, examples of critics reactions included "Kitty litter" from the Philadelphia Enquirer whilst The New York Times suggested ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review The Cat in the Hat..! (347 words)

The Cat In The Hat- not just for Children, I find this hilarious! I first came across this film when my boyfriend bought me it as a present one day. I sat down to watch and found myself not just laughing the whole way though but repeating all the funny voices! With Mike Myers as the voice over, it adds to the comedy of the film! The Film This film came out in 2004 and was released as an animation film which is certainly correct! The film starts with two children who live with their mother and on a cold wet day they find themselves bored with nothing to do. The daughter is very sophisticated and enjoys being her mothers pet, ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review The Cat In the Hat (2004) (DVD): Really bad (285 words)

Rating:

note: also appears in part on Flixster and The Student Room The Cat in the Hat is based on the 1957 book of the same name by Dr. Seuss, but don't let that fool you; this is a poorly crafted iteration of Seuss's tale, and can't get a solid enough turn out from Myers to make it worthwhile. While Jim Carrey got away with it on the Seuss adaptation of The Grinch, Myers can't elevate a terrible script anything above the standards of mediocrity. Conrad and Sally Walden (Spencer Breslin and Dakota Fanning) are two kids who are rather bored due to being left home alone while it is raining. Premium Review Probably More Suitable For Adults Than Kids... (167 words)
by - written on 30/06/09 (Useful, 4 readings)
Rating:

I have mixed feelings about this film. On the one hand, the acting is great (Sean Hayes in particular), and the design work captures the feel of the world of Dr. Seuss perfectly. Mike Myers is as good as ever, playing the bizarre character of the cat as well as anyone could. The children are unusually endearing- often child characters in films like this are either horribly twee or quaintly disfunctional, but the child actors in this film play their characters believably. On the other hand, the crude humour gets too much for me, in some cases to the point of not being suitable for children. I dislike this trend of getting easy laughs from kids with toilet ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review The Cat In the Hat (2004) (DVD): Surprisingly brilliant (282 words)
by - written on 01/04/09 (Useful, 15 readings)
Rating:

I have to admit, I watched this with preconceived thoughts that it wasn't gonna be any good. From seeing the trailers, I thought it looked babyish and too silly. But, I decided to give it a chance when I saw it was on telly. And man, was I pleasantly surprised. This film is hilarious - Mike Myers truly did a top job as the Cat. A lot of actors can't do the totally ridiculous characters, they just don't seem to be able to really let it all go and go nuts. But people like Myers are a pleasure to watch as he doesn't hold back at all and lets his inner insanity out. Only overshadowed by the legendary Jim Carrey from The Grinch, which as it's also a Dr Seuss story and done in ...  Read the complete review
