Cinderella Man (DVD) ... released 30 January, 2006 at Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainm / Features of the DVD: Dubbed, PAL, Widescreen / Cinderella Man is a wholesome slice of old-fashioned Americana, offering welcomed relief from the shallowness of many summer blockbusters. In dramatising the legendary Depression-era comeback of impoverished boxer Jim Braddock, director Ron Howard benefits from another superb collaboration with his A Beautiful Mind star Russell Crowe, whose portrayal of Braddock is simultaneously warm, noble, and tenacious without resorting to even the slightest hint of sentimental melodrama. The desperate struggle of the American Depression is more keenly felt here than it was in Seabiscuit, and Howard shows its economic impact in ways that strengthen the bonds between Braddock, his supportive wife--Renée Zellweger--and three young children, and his loyal manager, played by Paul Giamatti; all are forced to make sacrifices leading up to Braddock's title bout against heavyweight champion Max Baer in one of greatest boxing matches in the history of the sport. Boasting the finest production design, cinematography and editing that Hollywood can offer, this is a feel-good film that never begs for your affection; it's just good, classical American filmmaking, brimming with qualities of decency and fortitude that have grown all too rare in the big-studio mainstream. --Jeff Shannon

We then see the almost Rocky-esque (Balboa, not Marciano) story unfold in front of our eyes as Gould lines up a one off, which subsequently becomes a come back. A fight against Corn Griffin leads to some of the hierarchy feeling he'd be good fodder for the menacing Art Lasky (who had a record of 34-4-2 with 27 KO's) in a semi final of a tournament t...more

As some may know I'm a huge boxing fan and would be more than happy to become a boxing journalist. I'm often up to 4 or 5 on a Saturday morning waiting to find the latest results from Argentina or watch the late night American cards, so this movie was perfect for me, a biopic on the former World Heavyweight champion (note 1) James J. Braddock (note 2 and 3). Sorry for any spoilers and the more boxing history centric review than most others. Sorry Let me apologise for these notes, just as a bit of a boxing afficiando I feel these may be useful to the reader, and I'm sorry if they break the flow of the actual review. The movie opens with a ...

Crowned Review The real Rocky. (1011 words)

Cinderella Man is the proud owner of possibly the worlds worst ever trailer, a trailer that empathises the worst of the film and make it seem like an overly sentimental, maudlin exercise of depression era poverty and failure mixed in with a Rocky style boxing underdog story. I saw the trailer and said there was no way I was ever going to see this film. The fact that the stars were Russell Crowe and Renee Zelwegger, two stars I don’t really have much time for at all, just reinforced my resolve. Why then am I now reviewing this you may be asking yourself… well every year The Cambridge Film Festival have a ‘surprise film’, you buy a ticket not having a clue what you ...

Premium Review Cinderella Man (DVD): Inspiration In The Depression (746 words)

When I first saw the trailer for Cinderella Man I rolled my eyes back till I saw into my skull. It was an incredibly vomit inducing trailer that just screamed, Depression!, America!, Adversity!, Oscars!. It was obvious that Ron Howard’s movie was aiming for the awards season and intended to pull on the heartstrings of Academy voters. So I don’t know why the studio released it in the summer of last year, as it’s not the kind of film I’d want to see during the summer blockbuster season. Needless to say it wasn’t the hit that was probably intended although it made a modest £60 odd million dollars but not enough to cover the budget. Anyway I’d read that ...
