Crowned ReviewThe City of Lost Children (DVD): The weird and wonderful world of Jeunet (851 words)
by - written on 20/08/07 (Very useful, 204 readings)
Rating:

Everyone reading this review must have seen and loved the film Amelie (2001), or at least have heard wonderful things about it. Following the success of this quirky French masterpiece many of you may also have seen the film Delicatessen (1991), another spectacular offering from director Jean-Pierre Jeunet. Having loved these movies we thought we’d see what else this largely unknown French director could come up with and so we hired The City of Lost Children which Jeunet co-directed with Marc Caro and which was released in 1995. The City of Lost Children is a bizarre, dark fantasy film, primarily set on an old oil rig off the French coast. The film starts with ...  Read the complete review

City of the Lost Children (584 words)

Rating:

City of the lost is a French film released in 1995 by directors Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet. Jeunet also directed the somewhat better known films 'Delicatessen' and 'Amelie'. * A scientist has created Krank, a man who ages much faster than normal people due to the fact that he is unable to dream. He lives on an oil rig out at sea along with a dwarf woman and 4 clones, who are forever wondering which one is the original. They also live with a large brain who tells them what they want to know, and some things they maybe shouldn't. Krank kidnaps children and steals their dreams to try and reverse his rapid ageing. All goes well until one day they kidnap ...  Read the complete review

The City of Lost Children (DVD): A dark fairytale (450 words)
by - written on 27/10/09 (Very useful, 15 readings)
Rating:

After Delicatessen, this was the next film from co-directors Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro. Although not a sequel to it, The City Of Lost Children does appear to inhabit a similar twisted world as the earlier film. The evil Krank (Daniel Emilfork) lives on an old oil rig at sea having been created by a mad scientist, but due to his inability to dream he is aging rapidly. In order to try and reverse the process he attempts to steal the dreams of little children with the aid of the scientist's other creations - 4 clones made in the image of the scientist and a dwarf lady. However, as the children are all scared of him, Krank only gets their nightmares. Then ...  Read the complete review

An increasingly bizarre dystopian fantasy......... (442 words)
by - written on 27/09/11 (Very useful, 23 readings)
Rating:

City Of Lost Children is arguably Jean-Pierre Jeunet's finest moment. The director who brought us Delicatessen, Amelie and Alien:Ressurection wonderfully brings to life this dark, surreal and increasingly enchanting adult fairy tale which stars his usual familiar cast this time alongside Hellboy's Ron Pearlman as a Carnival strongman reluctantly pulled into the adventure of a lifetime as he searches for his missing baby brother.... Set in a dystopian future and inspired by films such as Brazil, Metropolis and 1984, the film tells the tale of a mad scientist who lives in a castle off the coast of a small harbour town. Having lost the ability to dream, this ...  Read the complete review
