The Closer You Get (DVD) ... released 06 October, 2003 at 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment / Features of the DVD: Anamorphic, PAL, Widescreen / An undemanding slice of Irish whimsy, The Closer You Get may not hit the crowd-pleasing heights of Waking Ned, but ultimately settles in to a comfortable, enticing groove inhabited by the likes of TV's Ballykissangel. The debut feature of Aileen Ritchie and set in a desolate coastal town of Kilvara in County Donegal, the story concerns the lovelorn male townsfolk who advertise for Gaelic-loving women in a Florida newspaper. This action stirs the jealousies of Kilvara's women, who respond by inviting a group of Spaniards to the local dance. A battle of the sexes ensues ultimately resulting in the Guinness-swilling eejits realising that they shouldn't squander what they've got. Simple moral, simple clichés, simple humour, but executed with a considerable charm that makes it an undeniably enjoyable and light-hearted film. Ian Hart is particularly likable as local butcher Kieran (bizarrely dyeing his hair bright blonde to impress the ladies) while he and his boredom-numbed mates are more than matched by the feisty likes of Niamh Cusack and Cathleen Bradley as Kilvara's ignored beauties. Add in some beautiful locations and what you have is an inoffensive little charmer that will suit any lazy afternoon's viewing--and what's wrong with that? --Danny Graydon

The net result of all this is the lesson Dorothy learned when she left Kansas; that when you are looking for your heart's desire, you don't have to look any further than your own backyard. Aileen Ritchie's directorial debut was marked by some nice photography of well-selected locations and an alluring portrayal of the local color and appeal. The characters all seemed very genuine and unaffected;...more

Premium Review The Closer You Get (DVD): Enchanting Irish Comedy (363 words)

This is a quaint and charming little comedy about life and love in rural northwestern Ireland. The question remains, how many rural Irish comedies can we watch before the material starts to get stale. The story begins with the single men of this little town complaining that the women are substandard and there are no marriage prospects. After downing far too many pints, they decide to place an advertisement in the Miami Herald to see if they can induce some American women to come to Ireland to the big town dance. When the townswomen get wind of the scheme, they invite some Spanish fishermen to the same dance. The result is a succession of comical situations where everyone ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review surprisingly unpredictable (144 words)

I was pleasntly suprised by this film. I went along to it not knowing much about it other than it was a British comedy set in a small village in Ireland, where the men of the village decide to advertise for american women to become potential brides. with the exeption of films such as four weddings and a funeral and The full Monty I have usualy found british comedy to be more depressing than funny (e.g. brassed off). This was not the case with the closer you get. I had all the best elements of a comedy, It was funny without being too predictable and slapstick, and the best of all kept me guessing right untill the end. (especially a rather unusual pairing to say the ...  Read the complete review
