Crowned Review Rain, Rain, Go Away (994 words)

Rating:

It's virtually impossible to mention The Crow without dwelling on the fact that its star Brandon Lee was killed during its making, so let's get that bit over with right now. So, is it a fitting final tribute to Bruce Lee's son or is it something that would have been quickly forgotten without those tragic events? In truth, it's a mixture of both. A film of hi-octane stunts, running gun battles and dark, Gothic sets, The Crow shows plenty of elements to keep your attention and make it worth watching at least once, even if it's unlikely to appear on anyone's list of greatest films. It centres on the gang murder of Eric Draven and his girlfriend. ...  Read the complete review

Have you ever sat down to write about a favourite book, or game, or film, and found you had no idea where to start? Have you ever tried to map out in what order you’re going to tell your reader about something, only to find that you can’t pick the right words to start with? Have you ever really thought about the impact your little review of something could have on even just one person, and know that no matter what you say, you’re never going to do that ‘something’ justice? Well, that’s been me over the past few months. And with just one little review, too. To some of you, this film may not even earn a ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Stuck His Blades in All His Major Organs in Alphabetical Ord ... (510 words)

The crow will forever be remembered for Brandon Lee's final performance as vengeful rock star Eric Draven. Sadly, Lee was killed on set during filming by a stray bullet. His appearence in tattered black clothing and white make-up have become so iconic that the rest of this film is often overlooked. While it's a simple violent revenge fest with satisfyingly brutal sequences, it ultimately fails to deliver the depth of psychology needed to do justice to Lee's brilliant curtain call. The film opens at a murder scene. Eric Draven and his fiance, Shelly (Sophia Shinas) have been brutally murdered on devil's night - the night before Halloween and the traditional ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review The Crow (DVD): Style over substance, but what style! (290 words)
by - written on 24/07/09 (Very useful, 3 readings)
Rating:

The Crow, an early work by Alex Proyas, who went on to direct great film Dark City, as well as palatable films i, Robot and Knowing, is a solid film that's elevated somewhat by the mystique surrounding the death of its star, Brandon Lee, who was tragically killed on set when a shard of a dummy bullet became lodged in a prop gun which was then fired at him during a scene, mortally wounding him. Lee was on the cusp of stardom, and so small portions of the film had to be ammended with a combination of primitive CGI and replacement back shots. The film opens as Sergeant Albrecht (Ernie Hudson) investigates a murder scene, where Shelly Webster (Sofia Shinas) has ...  Read the complete review
