Advantages: great cast
Disadvantages: long film
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button was a film that I had heard so many mixed reviews on I thought that it was about time that I watched what everyone was talking about and if it was worthy of the awards that it received.
With Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett playing the main roles in the film, they story picks up from 1918 where Brad Pitt plays Benjamin Button, a baby born in an old person's body, who to start looks ugly and struggles with life who then get younger instead of older as a role reversal to everyone else and how their life normally pans out.
A brief summary of the story is a blind man is commissioned to create a clock to hang in a train station, upset by the news of his son's death in WWI, he creates a clock which runs backwards to try and restore all the lives of loved ones.
One day a young mother passes away after giving birth to a baby boy, unfortunately when the father see his baby boy he notices that the boy is not a normal child and the father leaves the baby on the doorstep of an old peoples home where a lovely lady Queenie find him and brings him up as if he were her own, she and her husband name him Benjamin.
Daisy, an elderly women played by Cate Blanchett, who is on her deathbed, she asks her daughter to read from a diary she wrote many years ago. The Diary links Daisy's life with Benjamin Button's and how they knew each other and how their paths crossed on many occasions.
This is a great love story that will have you hooked for start to finish and shows that sometimes when you love someone you have to do what is right for everyone, not just what you would like out of life.
The advantages of this film that it was a very detailed script and therefore set the scene and left you without any questions unanswered like some films do. Both Pitt and Blanchett achieve their roles really well and the fact that they can both play the parts as they age is a testament to how great they are. The special effects also did a great job as making Benjamin the elderly man that he was, was clever as he looked life like and hard to believe that special effects have been used.
The disadvantages of this film were that it was over two and a half hours long, in my opinion I feel that this could have been cut down slightly and some of the parts skimmed over instead of going into them in the great detail they went into as it was starting to drag slightly in the middle before Pitt turned into his younger hansom self. The film ending was also a little predictable which sort of spoilt the ending as I like a film with a twist at the end.
A good film, well worth a watch, I will have to try and get a copy of the book and see if it matches up to the film, as I feel the books normally have more detail, but I am not sure about this one as there was so much description in the film. If you are a Brad Pitt fan this is definitely a film for you, you will not be disappointed.
Summary: great film !
