Advantages: Peter Cushing & Christopher Lee

Disadvantages: none

Made in 1957, this was the first of Hammer's cycle of Frankenstein movies. Universal Studios, which had made the black and white sequence of Frankenstein movies in the 1930s would not allow Hammer to use the make-up effects which they had created and which the general public associated with the character (the block head and the 'bolts' in the neck) and threatened to sue if Hammer did use it, so they had to come up with a new look for the monster, and indeed they did. In this movie the monster is played by Christopher Lee, although Bernard Bresslaw was apparently in the running for the part in the early days.

Peter Cushing plays the mad scientist who creates the monster, here known as Victor Frankenstein. With his colleague and friend Paul Krempe, played by Robert Urquhart, Frankenstein plays God and creates life.

As with most Frankenstein films, this movie plays with the storyline as originally created by Mary Shelley for her novel FRANKENSTEIN, OR THE MODERN PROMETHEUS, but I don't see that there is anything wrong with that. Print and film are two completely different media, and what works in one does not always work in the other. I really like this film, and it still scares me at times. Watch out for an appearance in the early scenes of the film by Melvyn Hayes as the young Victor. Hayes would later find great success in the TV show IT AIN'T HALF HOT MUM.
