Advantages: gore
Disadvantages: none really
The Descent has to be one of my all time favourite British horrors. The premise doesn't sound all that appealing initially; a group of young women go caving. I heard a lot of disparaging remarks about it being for blokes due to the scantily clad women getting soaked and dirty down in the caves. I ignored the negativity and gave the film a go. I loved it.
The Descent sees Sarah meeting up with a group of friends for a caving expedition one year after she suffered a personal tragedy. Still apprehensive and reluctant to take part in any dangerous activity, her friends assure her the trip will be fun and just what she needs.
This film has the usual stereotypes; the sexy one, the loudmouth, the tomboy, the shy girl and the initial group scenes come across as a little forced. Once settled and the characters have been introduced however, the movie relaxes and the fun times (violence and gore) begin! The mountainous, woodland setting gives the film an added air of isolation and you certainly get the impression this group is many, many miles from civilisation.
Cue a trip down into the caves, a reckless decision made by one of the group and some in-fighting then throw in terrifying creatures intent on picking the group off one by one and you have the recipe for a relentless and truly enjoyable claustrophobic watch.
Fun, gory and lots of scares.
I do not have the 2 disc special addition so cannot comment on the extras.
Summary: A claustraphobic British horror with lots of scares.
