Advantages: Witty dialogue

Being a big fan of Ugly Betty, I decided to give this a go. They are very similar in story (the 'ugly duckling' tries to be successful in the overly glamourous world of fashion), but Ugly Betty is much funnier and I felt it had better morals in it. This film is a lighthearted drama with only the odd moment of mild comedy in it. It was very well acted and Meryl Streep in particular performed the 'dragon lady' excellently - however I did find the title slighlty misleading. Sure, she was a cold-hearted cow, but I still didn't feel they went far enough with her character - not nearly what you'd call the devil, they even attempted to show a softer side to her. I would've enjoyed this film more if she'd been more of a straighforward villain. And Anne Hathaways character wasn't a patch on Betty - there were times when I found her dislikeable, which took the movie down a notch for me, unlike Betty who I can't help but adore. Overall it's well-written and witty and there were some great moments and comments, but quite a few aspects left me feeling dissatisfied too. Believe it or not though, I did actually enjoy this quite a bit and despite the story being cliched and predicatable, I never found myself bored. On it's own it's a decent film and worth watching if you like this sort of thing, which generally I don't anyway. It was a poor man's Ugly Betty in my opinion.
