Advantages: Abslotuely outsanding performances!
Disadvantages: None, according to me
I said it before and I will say it again- Meryl Streep is one amazingly talented actress! Watching her Machiavellian act in The Devil Wears Prada is just enough to make you want to hide under the table. I absolutely loved both the book and the movie, but I personally believe that the many acclaims and positive criticism this movie received was mainly due to the stunning performances of Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly.
I watched the movie first, and then read the book, and I could see some major differences between the plots. However, in my opinion the movie in itself is extremely well done. It is a plot where many may find themselves- Andy (Anne Hathaway) is a girl fresh out of college who lands a job at Runaway, the biggest fashion magazine which is lead by the notoriously strict Miranda Priestly. Other actors, such as Emily Blunt, who plays Andy's haughty mentor in the movie also largely, contribute to the success and realism of the movie. In fact, the realistic element was what drew me to the movie in the first place (apart from Meryl Streep, that is!). I had an extremely strict Professor at University at that time and I wanted to watch the movie as soon as I heard about the character Miranda Pristely, who bizarrely sounded like my Professor! But I was really stunned by both the simplicity and the realistic dimension of The Devil Wears Prada. You see it all- low paying, zero respect, degrading jobs that force you to work extra hours for a boss with no gratitude at all! But despite these negative features, the movie is far from being dark and heavy. Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Stanley Tucci as well as Emily Blunt all contribute towards bringing a lighter, more refreshing touch to the movie as a whole.
What makes Meryl Streep the perfect Miranda Priestly lies in every single component of her acting. When she is Miranda Priestly, gone are the smiling eyes which somehow trademark her. I don't know how she did it, but her eyes are all cold, expressionless and frigid all through the movie. Moreover, her delivery flow and tone also very much contributed towards creating the evil and cruel character of Miranda Priestly- she never ever raises her voice, but constantly expresses herself in a scary low-pitched soft voice. I believe that she did a much better job in that way, rather than screaming and shouting at everyone. The book mentions the "drawl" of Miranda Priestly several time and Streep rose to the challenge perfectly!
I also particularly liked the DVD Extras. They include:
*Commentary tracks
*Featurettes
*Deleted Scenes (a must-see!)
*Gag Reel
*Trailers and TV Spots
Overall, this is a brilliant film with outstanding performances! Very highly recommended indeed!
Thanks for reading!
