Advantages: the story
Disadvantages: subtitles
WHAT IS IT ABOUT:
'The Diving Bell and the Butterfly' tells the true story of Jean Dominique Bauby, a French magazine editor. After living a self centred life of fast cars and illicit affairs, his world comes crashing down around him when he has a stroke and is able only to communicate by blinking his eye.
WAS IT ANY GOOD:
This film is brilliant mainly due the sheer power of the story itself. It tells the story from Jean's own thoughts, with a narrator speaking his mind, and most of the film is shot from Bauby's 'one eyed' perspective.
The acting is brilliant, in particular the lead role (Mathie Amalric) who plays the paralysed Jean with great dignity. The support roles are acted adequately, but the reason this film is such a succsess is definitely because of the power of the story, nothing else.
'The Diving Bell and the Butterfly' is a French movie, so have to read the subtitles, but as with all good films of this kind you soon forget that.
If you liked it, then why not buy the book (as I did) which has the same title.
Summary: watch it!
