Advantages: Riproaring entertainment

Disadvantages: Totally implausible

Real boy's own stuff from the same World War Two stable that John Sturges had already plundered for his late sixties hit 'Where Eagles Dare'. This is from a Jack Higgins novel rather than Alistair Maclean, but the recipe is exactly the same - undercover heroics, decent action, and Nazis.

This is odd, in that most of the central characters are in fact Nazis (Michael Caine's 'hero' for example), involved in a plot to take over a small English village as part of an entirely improbable plot to assassinate Churchill. It is, in a rather daft way, highly entertaining, with solid performances from Caine, Robert Duvall, and Donald Sutherland as an ambivalent IRA collaborator whose sympathies are always in doubt.

Though based on various historical bits and pieces, it's arrant nonsense, and the final twist is just a joke; moreover, the 1942 propaganda thriller 'Went The Day Well' is far more subversive and challenging with the same basic premise. However, if you see it in the TV schedules, you will be entertained.
