It's funny how some films can completely surprise you. I went to see The Edge of Love expecting a Dylan Thomas biopic; being a huge fan of the poet I was prepared to put up with my two most-hated actresses, the twin horrors of Keira Knightley and Sienna Miller.

Firstly, the film isn't about Dylan Thomas, not really. Sure, it's the complex, amoral, charming Dylan who brings together his wife Caitlin Thomas and his childhood sweetheart Vera Phillips. But ultimately the film concerns the relationship between these two women: the love, the jealousy and the ultimately destructive feelings they both have for the same man. I was amazed by the acting of both Knightley and Miller: I have completely changed my opinion of both of them. Sienna Miller especially was fantastic as the eccentric, free-spirited Caitlin, but Keira Knightley was great too as Vera.

Visually the film is stunning and very well-shot, and successfully evokes both Forties wartime London and rural windswept Wales. The film flows at a steady, absorbing pace, with scenes interspersed with Thomas's haunting and beautiful poetry.

A wonderful film, that I would recommend for people who have never heard of Dylan Thomas, as well as his fans.
