This is an intriguing offering from Cannes hat-tricker Shohei Imamuro. Following the success of "The Ballad of Nurayama" (Palme d'Or, 1983) and "Black Rain" (Grand Technical Prize, 1989)(nothing to do with Michael Douglas), Imamura co-wrote this screen adaptation of "Glimmering in the Dark" by Akira Yoshimura. The main character, Takuro Yamashita, is played by Koji Yakusho, choice lead in many Japanese films of the nineties due to his good-looking flexibility which takes him through such diverse roles as feudal warrior (TV series of Shogun), kinky Man in White Suit (Tampopo, 1986), shy office worker (Shall We Dance, 1986) and ...
