Advantages: Well Acted, Well Made
Disadvantages: Long and in place boring.
The English patient is a film based on the book of the same name by Michael Ondaajte. Having never read the book I can't say whether it sticks to the story or not.
The film was released in 1996 and won an incrdible 9 academy awards including Best Picture. I can see why it won these awards and understand why the film is seen as been good. However, for me it is a 'typical' award winnng film, in the respect that it is a slow film with little action, that is more about the quality of acting and the context of the film, which to be honest isn't my cup of tea, don't get me wrong though I do enjoy quality acting.
The film is a romance set around World War 2, it follows the story of a man who had a terrible plave crash and has 90% burns on his body. This man becomes known as the English Patient. We see a young nurse named Anna looking after him in an old building. A few days after they get there a man named Moose turns up and is a very suspicious character.
Throghout the story we see The English Patient regaining his memory and he begins remember a love affair with a very beautiful women called Catherine. As well as his love story we also see Anna gain a love interest whilst looking after him. She befriends a Sikh who is in the area disarming bombs and finding land mines.
We see both love stories unfold and they both come to a 'lump in the throat' end. As well as this we see why Moose is so interested in The English Patient.
Although I don't like these kind of films, I think the film was good, well made and well acted. If you enjoy romances this is definitley a film you should watch (my partner cried her eyes out).
I having given this film 4 stars simply because I appreciate why it is a good film, not necessarily because I enjoyed it.
Summary: Appreciate why it is good, not my kind of film.

- 01/02/09 Nice review but i love this film as it's so mature and well-made. I didn't find it boring: it is v. watchable in the right frame, and gripping towards the tragic end. |

- 22/10/08 So boring and sprawling...another over-rated Oscar flop. |
