Advantages: All of it
Disadvantages: None at all
The first time I saw the Exorcist was in the cinema sometime back in the eighties, when I was just a lad, to be honest the subject matter, eg. demonic possesion, has always been one of those where the viewer is always on dodgy ground. What I mean is I have always found it more believable than the run of the mill 'slasher movies' ie, scream. The Exorcist sees a little girl possessed by the spirit of a demon and a couple of priests who battle to expell it. Now I've read the book and seen the film, twice. And it must be said that although we as the cinema going public have witnessed some fantastical things, especially in the last ten years, The Exorcist still gives the viewer that uneasy feeling when watching the movie. No it's not as shocking as it would have been back in the 70s, but I think it still delivers on all levels. To be fair the fx still look pretty damn good even in this day and age. But all the time there is this child, an innocent, going through the torment of possesion, the things she does and comes out with would make granny faint! This film is a gem, and although I feel it has a timeless quaility, it has to be kept in mind that it was made in the seventies, as the cynical would no doubt pick a few holes. The Exorcist - If you haven't seen it watch it as soon as you can. If you have, watch it again, you may be surprised at the outcome as long as you watch it for what it is, a cracking horror film made in the 70s! Wemstalker
