Advantages: It's The Exorcist!
Disadvantages: Shows it's age.
I saw the Exorcist about a year ago, when it was re-released in the cinema for Hallowe'en. Naturally I'd heard more about it than I'd actually witnessed so, a few friends and I gathered together at midnight, for this special viewing! Well...... to be honest I was expecting it to be more scary. Yes, it's now 27 years old and the horror genre has moved on, but I think the most scary thing is thinking about the writer. If you haven't seen it, pause for a second during the film and think about the imagination that thought this stuff up...... disturbing. That said, some of the more 'horrific' scenes were so bizarre I found myself laughing, but then perhaps I'm just a bit sick! I think The Exorcist has also been hindered by it's own fame. It's been parodied so many times the take-offs are uppermost in your mind when you see the famous scenes for the 'first' time. Leslie Nielson has a lot to answer for! That said the acting is fantastic, Linda Blair belies her, then, tender age by turning in a wonderful performance. The story is gripping if not particularly fast moving and the directing..... oh, a marvel to behold. I know it too is an Exorcist related cliche, but the shot of the house with the fog rolling in...... sublime. If you haven't seen this film, it is a must see, if only for the fact that it is SO famous. The effects still hold-up today, but it does show you how far film making has advanced, in such a short-time. Shame the stories aren't up to as much nowadays.

- 13/11/00 Would you think doing a Ouja Board was so funny. Try it if you dare, the film is more scary to lots of people who claim to have bad experiences using them. |
