Advantages: Fab 70's thriller

Disadvantages: Dated

Laura Mars, (Faye Dunaway) is a leading and controversial fashion photographer in 70's New York, her work is full of menace, a fusion of fashion and violence. Mars begins to have visions, visions of colleagues being murdered and instantly, they begin to die in just the way she has seen.

Cue a suitably scenery chewing performance from Dunaway and some truly dreadful cheesy dialogue between Laura and her policeman lover (Tommy Lee Jones).

Made in 1978 it is a period piece now however there is much to like in the film, the storyline is clever and intriguing, it is easy to imagine the film being controversial in the 70's, Helmut Newton's work was used as Mars' work and is still very striking, even shocking, some thirty years later, it is very well used in the film. It's actually surprising that the film hasn't been remade (and spoiled!)

Not at all gory but perhaps not a film for everyone given the themes, it is a surprisingly good thriller with a twist ending. One that you'll love or hate, I loved it.

Certificate 15, 99 minutes. On TV quite often, I missed it one night a few weeks back so I rented it from Lovefilm.

Summary: Must see 70's chiller thriller!
