The Fabulous Baker Boys (DVD) ... released 22 August, 2005 at Prism Leisure / Features of the DVD: PAL / Frank and Jack Baker are a pair of smaltzy, professional musicians who play small clubs. When times begin to get leaner and gigs are few and far between they decide to audition for a female singer to join their act. Susie Diamond, a former escort and a bit of a diamond in the rough, fits the bill and business starts to pick up again. Susie becomes more than just the icing on the cake of the trio though, and pushes them to re-evaluate where they are going, and how honest they have been with each other.

... or not their success is worth their relationship and their sanity. Real life brothers Beau and Jeff Bridges turn in brilliant performances as the brothers at each others throats, Jeff lending an honesty to his role that gives it more poignancy as the film goes on. When the work starts to dry up, they realise that they have to do an overhaul. Initially, their attempts to lure a female vocalist brings a myriad of useless and tuneless singers. However, when Suzie Diamond turns up, albeit late and with her own bad attitude, things start to take a turn for the better. Susie's an ex escort looking to go straight, but wont settle as a guest ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review an excellent movie musical (278 words)

Rating:

This is one of my favourite films. It stars Beau Bridges and Jeff Bridges (who are brothers in real life) as the Baker Brothers. Both of them play the piano, and they regularly perform as a double act to earn their living, in lounge bars and hotel ballrooms. They’ve been playing together for over 30 years and now their act has become somewhat stale. In order to spice up their act they decide to hire a singer, and along comes Susie Diamond, a smouldering sex goddess played by Michelle Pfeiffer. Although Beau Bridges’ character (Frank) is a family man, the Jeff Bridges character (Jack) is much more of a self-destructive character, having one night ...  Read the complete review
