Luc Besson's high-octane film The Fifth Element incorporates presidents, rock stars and cab drivers into its peculiar plot, traversing worlds and encountering some pretty wild aliens. Bruce Willis stars as a down-and-out cabbie who must win the love of Leeloo (Milla Jovovich) to save Earth from destruction by Jean-Baptiste Emmanuel Zorg (Gary Oldman) and a dark, unearthly force that makes Darth Vader look like an Ewok. --Geoff Riley

The film revolves around four stones that represent the elements (fire, earth, wind, and water), and how they hold the key to the fate of the world, in that they can be used to prevent a cataclysmic cosmic event that is impending. Thus Jean-Baptiste Emanuel Zorg (Gary Oldman), a wealthy megalomaniac, wants to gain control of them for his own nefarious purposes, to ensure that the economy continues to thrive. However, cantankerous cabbie Corbin Dallas (Bruce Willis) becomes embroilled in a plot to get hol...more

Premium Review The Fifth Element (DVD): Can I take the Fifth? (1502 words)

It seems that in the last year The Fifth Element has been on one TV channel or another at least once a month. There you are flicking through the channels and no matter where it is in the film it is instantly recognisable. Every time it is on I ask myself "How many times has this film been on the television now?"and "how many times have I watched it when it has been on?" Well the answer to both is - I've lost count! Luc Besson's The Fifth Element (1997) is set in the 23rd century and is unlike any other sci-fi film I have seen. The overall plot is simple enough to understand and to say anymore will give it away so I shall stick to this ...  Read the complete review

It is several centuries into the future. When a strange entity is spotted moving on its way towards Earth, the authorities do exactly what any self-respecting authority would do. They deploy a battle cruiser to go and fire missiles at it. Unfortunately, the entity seems only to absorb the energy from the explosions and then sends it hurtling back towards the ship. The last thing that the crew of the cruiser sees is a huge fireball in the shape of an enormous skull that opens its mouth and engulfs them. Dumbfounded and horrified by what has happened, the authorities then turn their attention to the ramblings of a priest who has sought counsel with the ...  Read the complete review

Well I have lost count of the amount of times I have seen this film. So I thought it only right that I give it a review. The fifth element came out way back in 1997, can't believe it's twelve years ago! This is a Sci-Fi adventure film starring Bruce Willis, Gary Oldman and Milla Jovovich. This film was a big hit at the box office and was even nominated for an Oscar. The film is set in the future. A cab driver named Korban Dallas find himself out driving when a woman falls through the roof of his cab. This is the first of a series of events that get him involved in a search for a powerful weapon that will stop a terrible evil that is lurking and will ...  Read the complete review

An ancient evil, once defeated, has come back to try and destroy the world again. It was prophecised that this evil would be defeated by an unknown quantity, called the fifth element, that would unite the four natural elements to create the divine light. A race of aliens, called the mondoshawan, entrusted the knowledge of the fifth element to a human. The evil that had been defeated would come back in 5000 years, and the human race should be prepared. The knowledge was to be passed down through the generations, until it would be needed again. As predicted, the evil arrived. The human race started by attacking it, but the attacks seemed only to ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review The Fifth Element (DVD): Aziz! Aziz! Aziz! (389 words)

In a very technological yet downbeat future, bored cab driver Korben Dallas (Bruce Willis) finds himself transporting and defending a strange young woman known as Leeloo seemingly from out of this world on her dangerous quest. She is the key to stopping the world being taken over by Evil and the sinister Mr Zorg (Gary Oldman). Unwittingly, Korben is harbouring the one person who holds the key to defending the world against this evil: Leeloo. The all star cast on show here do a very good job of turning a potentially disastrous and instantly forgettable sci-fi thriller into an entertaining and at times comedic action thriller. Supporting an average Willis and a ...  Read the complete review
