Bruce Willis meets sci-fi (The Fifth Element (DVD))

Whilst he certainly doesn't have much of an arsenal of acting abilities, there is something all too likable about Bruce Willis. He exudes coolness, and is somehow strangely authentic and believable in any role he takes. Still, even for him this is a role that pushes the boundaries. He stars as Korben, a cab driver in the future who ends up protecting a mysterious alien woman from the forces that seek to catch her.

This is a sci-fi film, yet it doesn't feel like one. There's something about it that helps it to transcend those barriers - probably the action filled plot and the striking character of Leeloo. Whatever it is, it's got more of an action adn adventure feel to it.

The plot is inventive, original and unpredictable - all the right ingredients for a good film.

The special effects work of flying cars and the like is strangely modern considering this film is now over ten years old, and the sparse use of them means that when you see the special effects they have more of an impact.

Acting is, as usual, wooden from Willis, but somehow alluring. Likewise, the support roles are equally interesting.

At 126 mintues it's not short, but I never got bored as the story is so original and interesting. This is quite an achievement for such a lengthy film, particularly in a world where most films are a mere 90 minutes long these days.
All in all, a great sci-fi that seems more action and adventure.
